This new report by We the People examines how the promise of ‘carbon credits’ through REDD+ has led to the commodification of the largest remaining forests in Nigeria and motivated government revocation of the land rights of forest dependent communities. This has in turn, resulted in unprecedented poverty, abuses and destitution. It also shows how the forest management policies supported by REDD+ has turned out to be the key driver of deforestation.
It concludes that the failure of REDD+ and the actions of the government are not only depriving indigenous people of their livelihoods, but also opening up the forests to unprecedented logging by local and foreign profiteers.
