On July 23, 2024, We the People held a townhall meeting in Otuabagi community, Bayelsa State, following the release of a podcast documenting the devastating impact of oil extraction in the region and the culpability of Shell, the operating oil company. The event brought together a diverse group of community members, including community chiefs, executive committee members, youths, and women. The townhall meeting aimed to address the pressing environmental issues faced by the community due to oil extraction activities and to chart a course for demanding accountability and justice.

The community participants confirmed the authenticity of the podcast’s content when it was played during the meeting. The Chief underscored the dire situation faced by the community, including the degradation of their land and water resources, the decline in agricultural productivity, and the health problems attributed to oil pollution. He called for collective action to address these issues and to hold the responsible parties accountable
In is address, Ken Henshaw, a Niger Delta environment and climate activist, acknowledged the resilience of the Otuabagi community and commended their courage in speaking out against the injustices they faced.
