On the 31st of October, 2025, We the People held a youth rally at the Akwa Ibom State University, Obio Akpa, Akwa-Ibom State. The rally aimed at mobilizing and educating young people on the need to participate in policy making processes in the country, as well as protect their democratic rights. This activity which is part of a series of engagements within the framework of the #IncludeNaija project, is founded on the premise that young people make up a significant percentage of Nigeria’s population, yet many remain excluded from decision making and leadership spaces. This gap continues to affect inclusive governance, democratic participation, and accountability. The project focuses on mobilizing young people and building their leadership capacity to take active roles in civic and political life, promote inclusive democracy, rights awareness, and youth-led actions.
In their opening, project officers Augustine Vicker Uka, Esq and JohnJoseph Atsu shared an overview of the project, co-funded by the European Union as part of its interventions to promote inclusive democracy and empower youths for credible leadership, and demand policy change and social justice.
The rally brought together students from different faculties, lecturers, and the leadership of the Students Union Government. The event also featured an interactive seminar session and open discussions about the place of young people in governance and community development. Participants were encouraged to see themselves not as bystanders and observers but as leaders capable of influencing systems change.
Speaking during the rally, Mr Iko-Obong E. Ekette, a lecturer at the university, emphasized the power of inclusion and participation as catalysts for justice, equity, and good governance. He encouraged students to rise to leadership responsibilities and take ownership of shaping the future of their communities.
Ms. Daramfon Ekanem, a student leader, spoke on the importance of female youth leadership and gender balance. She highlighted how increased representation ensures increased inclusion, and encouraged young women to participate confidently in leadership spaces. She also stressed that empowering young women lays the foundation for a more inclusive and equitable future, with diverse voices drive long-term change.
The event was brought to a close with participants expressing enthusiasm and pledging to serve as ambassadors of inclusive governance, promoting active involvement in civic and community affairs. They also committed to encourage gender inclusion and equal participation in leadership, and support one another in challenging unjust systems and promoting accountability.
